Shopping for EarringsPosted: September 29, 2011
One of the most fun things about shopping in Mexico is looking at the variety and styles of earrings in workshops and mercados. I just added a bunch of new earrings to the website (go here)…several super fancy ones from Oaxaca, some more informal ones and some middle of the road types that could be worn to work.
The silver work on the fancy earrings is superior and the designs are traditional–many designs are taken from images of Frida Kahlo wearing spectacular earrings with her indigenous blusas and skirts. The less expensive earrings are usually alpaca, an alloy of nickel and silver, and they come in lots of varieties–hearts, hands, inlaid, images of Frida and the Virgin of Guadalupe.
